The King’s Playschool in Glen Eden, voted the Best Pre-Primary facility in the Eastern Cape in the ABSA Sowetan Awards 2008, is a place of safety for children at risk and the school that children sponsored through the African Angels programme attend, where they become ready to enroll into mainstream schools in East London.
Tracy King, her husband Pastor Jono King and their three children have opened their home and their hearts to children in need. Tracy and Jono have their own three children; they have adopted Baby Benjamin, and foster three other children, Anna Grace, Samuel and Elijiah.
What The King’s Playschool provides
An integrated and nurturing educational environment, with a 6:1 teacher to learner ratio.
Tracy and her team see that all learners achieve school readiness for Grade R or Grade 1. For children living in informal townships this is especially challenging.
A place of safety for abandoned and abused children.
A feeding scheme for the Angels so they get a hot breakfast and a hot lunch and a daily vitamin tablet. For some children this is only food they will get all day.
Clothes parcels for each Angel and their siblings - lovingly sorted into sex and age, so they are just right for each child.
Health checks for the Angels including treatment of recurring skin conditions, vaccinations, nutrition and reporting abuse to the relevant authorities.
Links and follow up with Police and Dept of Social Development to ensure that abuse and neglect of any child is addressed, and where appropriate facilitating foster care.
The use of classrooms for uuMama Club meetings – where mothers of Angels come together for information sessions on health, finance and other relevant topics;
Love and quality education for all children.
